Garage Door Spring Replacement
The spring does the lifting, not the opener. When it breaks the door becomes dead weight. This is the one repair you should not try yourself.
What we do
Avi measures the existing spring, because the replacement has to match the door. Wire size, inside diameter and length all matter, and the wrong spring will either fail early or leave the door unbalanced.
The old spring comes off with the door secured, the new one goes on, and then the door is wound and balanced. Balance is the part that gets skipped by people in a hurry. A balanced door stays put when you lift it halfway and let go. That is what takes the strain off the opener.
While the door is open he checks the cables, the drums and the bearings, because a spring that let go often takes something else with it.

Frequently asked questions
In most cases yes. The two springs have done the same number of cycles, so when one goes the other is usually close behind. Replacing both at once means one trip instead of two.
Please do not. With a broken spring the door is extremely heavy and the opener is not built to lift that weight. Leave it closed, unplug the opener if you can, and wait.
A straightforward spring replacement is usually done in about an hour, including balancing the door and checking the cables.
Springs are rated in cycles, and one cycle is one open and one close. How long that lasts depends entirely on how often you use the door. A household that opens the door several times a day will get through them faster than one that uses it twice.
